Doctor Nel fights ‘out of control’ stigma against Florida pain clinics

As a board-certified pain medicine doctor, Dr. Willem Nel makes critical decisions almost every day about how to help people suffering with severe pain. It’s a complex job that can make the difference between someone feeling a whole lot better or spiraling into addiction.

But lately, images of out-of-control Florida pain clinics with lines of addicts — many of them from out of state — has left a stain on this pain business.

Nel, 44, feels the backlash and it makes him angry. Often he’s trying to help someone like Spearance, who is suffering but doesn’t want to be on drugs.

“We’ll find other ways,” he told her.

Gulf-to-Bay Pain Medicine Supports Tampa Lupus Walk

Gulf-to-Bay Pain Medicine (GTBPain) will be supporting the 2010 Tampa Lupus Walk at Al Lopez Park on Saturday, April 24th. “Walk with Us to Cure Lupus” is the signature national grassroots fundraising program of the Alliance for Lupus Research (ALR). Designed to increase awareness of lupus and raise crucial funds for lupus research programs.

Lupus is an autoimmune disease that can affect almost every major organ in the body, including the heart, kidneys, skin, lungs and brain. The US Department of Health and Human Services estimates the number of Americans suffering from lupus at approximately 1.4 million–making lupus more common than leukemia, muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and cystic fibrosis.

GTBPain is sponsoring a booth and will be handing out pain information brochures and giveaways for the Lupus Walk participants.
